Geology

Short characteristics of the site: Rock city (castellated sandstones). Tectonically deliminated block of Cretaceous sandstones. Intensive morphological differentiation due to a selective weathering. Many interesting relief phenomena. Also pseudokarst features as caverns. Geomorphologically and sedimentologically significant locality. The area has the form of a cuesta looming over the Jizera river valley. It is built up by quartzose sandstones of Turonian-Coniacian age. The sandstone bodies show a complex system of diagonal bedding.
Regional geologic unit: Bohemian Massif > Cretaceous of the Bohemian Massif > Bohemian Cretaceous Basin > Bohemian Cretaceous Basin - Jizera development
Stratigraphy: Upper Turonian
Subject: geology, geomorphology, archeology, hydrogeology, lithology, sedimentology
Geological phenomenon: cuesta, pseudocrast cave, cliff, rock chimney, natural window, karren, honeycombs, canyon, castellated rocks, balancing stone, fossils fauna, block field
Genesis: sedimentary, weathering
Rock: sandstone
