Geology

Short characteristics of the site: Together with the Antoníček Spring, Pott’s Valley represents the southernmost and simultaneously lowest-lying group of mineral springs in the inner spring system of Mariánské Lázně. The emergence of mineral waters here is conditioned by the tectonic setting, specifically the intersection of the Mariánské Lázně Fault with transverse faults. This has created a deep zone of decomposed rock in the bedrock, allowing for intensive water circulation and the ascent of carbon dioxide. The oldest and most famous source in this area is the Prelate Spring, known prior to 1890 and renovated in 1920; it was the only spring in this group utilized for drinking cures. Between 1905 and 1911, a number of other outflows were tapped in the valley, often named after letters of the Greek alphabet (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta) or specific names (Schirmer, Putz). An extensive hydrogeological survey was conducted in Pott’s Valley between 1954 and 1955 to boost the spa’s spring resources for carbonic baths. Despite its significant yield, which makes this location one of the most productive structures in Mariánské Lázně, the local mineral water is currently not fully utilized and largely drains freely into Úšovice Creek.
