Geology

Short characteristics of the site: The Ferdinand Spring is the oldest historically documented source in Mariánské Lázně. This spring structure is geologically associated with heavily altered amphibolites and gneisses. A unique feature of this system is its extreme chemical variability within a very small area. South of the Ferdinand Springs, in the valley of Úšovice Creek, lies the Rudolf Spring group, situated on the geological contact between the amphibolite massif and paragneisses. Chemically, this represents a distinct type Ca-Mg-HCO3 with a high calcium and magnesium content, utilized primarily for the treatment of urological disorders and kidney diseases due to its diuretic effects. Given that waters with mineralization exceeding 10 g/L and very weakly mineralized waters occur in close proximity in this area, this system requires strict protection to prevent unwanted mixing and the degradation of these specific hydrochemical types.
