Geology
Short characteristics of the site:
The Berchemštola is located in the Michalova Hora mining district (German: Michaelsberg) near Planá, which is one of the historically most important ore districts in Western Bohemia. Mining activity began here before the Hussite Wars. The greatest boom occurred after 1517 under the administration of the Counts Šlik. In 1593, the settlement was promoted to a mining town. Silver, lead and zinc were primarily mined here. The uniqueness of the district lies in the presence of the so-called "five-element formation" (Ag-Ni-Co-Bi-As), when approximately 12 veins were also mined for nickel and cobalt ores. The area is interwoven with dozens of adits. Among the most famous are the St. Andrew's Adit (Šlik's Adit) in Planá, which today houses a mining museum, or the St. John the Baptist Adit (Silver Adit II) in Michalový Horá. An interesting feature is the adit mineral spring – a mineral spring flowing from the Minerálka adit. Mining was stopped in the 20th century. The location is sought after by mineralogists and tourists.
