Geology
Short characteristics of the site:
The former St. John the Baptist adit (also known as the Silver adit II) is one of the most important and extensive mining works in the historical ore district of Michalovy Hory. Michalovy Hory was known primarily for the mining of silver and lead (galena). The district experienced its greatest prosperity in the 16th century, when around 20 mines operated there. The decline occurred after the Thirty Years' War and the definitive end of mining activity in this area came in the first half of the 19th century. The St. John the Baptist adit was a multi-storey work that was connected underground to other mines in the district. It was allegedly once accessible to neighboring adit (e.g. Štěpán Šlik), which enabled extensive drainage and transport within the entire district. The heaps near the adit are still sought by mineralogists for the occurrence of rare secondary minerals, such as picropharmacolite or pyromorphite.
