Geology

Short characteristics of the site: In the cut near the church, sedimentary breccia and conglomerate of the Palkovice Formation (Silesian Unit of the Carpathian Flysch Belt), intercalated with thin layers of sandstone, are exposed. Breccia and conglomerate are matrix-supported at the base and clast-supported above. The clasts consist practically exclusively of Stramberg-type limestone. In places, a faint imbrication of clasts can be observed. Foraminiferal microfauna and calcareous nannoplankton with Micula decussata and Marthasterites furcatus from claystone laminae confirm Coniacian age of the strata (Stráník et al. 1997). Conglomerates and breccias are deposits of dense gravity currents and debris flows, sandstones are classic turbidites. Conglomerates in Starý Jičín form a klippe of the Silesian Nappe on the Subsilesian Unit.
