Geology

Short characteristics of the site: At the southern margin of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin there is the sequence of Cretaceous sediments include basal Peruc-Korycany Formation (Cenomanian) up to Bílá Hora Formation (Lower Turonian). The first formation consists mainly of quartzose sandstones with claystone interlayers. The second Formation is made of sandy siltstones, marlstones and spongilitic claystones (so called "opuka". The bedrock of the Košumberk Castle is formed of the Tertiary basalt witht clear columnar jointing. This basalt is a product of channelway intrusions into Cretaceous sediments. In basalt vicinity the Cretaceous marlstones have been transformed into porcelanites.¨ The Košumberk basals demonstrate the easternmost Tertiary volcanic aktivity in Bohemia. The locality is a part of the National Geopark Železné Hory - the Iron Mountains".
