Geology
Short characteristics of the site:
Northern margin of the Železné hory Crystalline consists of Proterozoic rocks belonging to the Chvaletice Group. Petrologically these sediments consist of phyllitized claystone, clayey and graphitic shales and greywackes. Intensive ore mineralization affected the whole area of former marine depositional environment. The so called "Chvaletice deposit" with manganese and pyrite ores became the largest deposit in the whole Austrian-Hungarian Empire. The mineralization affected Proterozoic clayey sediments. The open working changed completely the landscape which is now covered by ash produced in nearby power plant. In the past several new minerals were discovered in this area. In the southern part of the locality so called the Chvaletice granite is exploited in two active quarries. The whole locality belongs to the National Geopark "Železné hory - the Iron Mountains".
