Geology

Short characteristics of the site: The 550 m long section along the Olše River at Vendryně is the type locality of the Vendryně Formation (Eliáš et al., 2003) formerly known as the Lower Těšín Beds sensu Menčík et al. (1983). Prevailing lithology are calcareous silty shales with local horizons of biodetritic marlstones with worn small macrofauna (Echinoidea, Crinoidea, Bivalvia, Gastropoda, aptychi etc.). Open joints filled by calcite contain also strontianite and traces of bitumen. The succession is affected by synsedimentary gravity folds and faults. The sediments were deposited in deep-sea conditions in the Late Jurassic (Kimmeridgian?, Tithonian).
