Geology

Short characteristics of the site: Bohemian Cretaceos Basin. Giant active quarry producing glass sands. Eighty metres thick section shows topmost stripping of Quaternary loesses and underlaining fluvial gravel and sand. Cretaceous section consists of overlying yellowish foundry sands and main body of whitish quartzose glass sands and sandstones. Their sequence can be subdivided into several cycles separated by reddish horizons made of clayey and silty sandstones. The sequence of glass sands stratigraphically belongs to the Teplice Formation. Sandstones contain locally rich and interestig macrofauna. Interesting pseudokarst feuatures can be observed together with a system of sedimentary structures and local tectonics. This locality belongs to the Geopark and Protected Landscape Area Český ráj - the Bohemian Paradise. In 2021 there was ratified one of the auxiliary sections of the Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) proposal for the base of the Coniacian Stage of the Upper Cretaceous Series and Cretaceous System due to supplement the details of the boundary record in various facies, and in differing geographic and biogeographic contexts.
