Geology

Short characteristics of the site: Bohemian Cretaceous Basin. The largest deposit of laterites up to lateritic bauxites opened by shallow mining workings. System oof galleries and underground workings. This laterite is of Cretaceous age and was formed by weathering of a pre-Cretaceous bedrock and enrichment of a residue by Fe and Al. Fe and Al minerals were studied in detail. Laterite was exploited as a poor iron ore containing 20 - 25 per cent of iron oxide. Elevated amount of TiO2 (4.8 per cent) is also interesting. Part of galleries, about 300 m, is accessible.
Regional geologic unit: Bohemian Massif > Cretaceous of the Bohemian Massif > Bohemian Cretaceous Basin > Bohemian Cretaceous Basin
Stratigraphy: Cretaceous
Subject: economic geology, petrology, mining and mining impacts
Geological phenomenon: karst, ore mineralization
Genesis: sedimentary, chemogenetic, anthropogenic (anthropogenic activity)
Rock: marlstone, laterite
