Geology

Short characteristics of the site: The Bohemian Cretaceous Basin. Broader area is represented by slightly tilted tectonic block. Castellated sandstone rocks (so called rock city)form dominating part of the area. Numerous sandstone towers, pillars and mesorelief features and deep canyons consisting of Cretaceous quadersandstones cover the largest of the area. The highest point is made of a dyke of olivinic nephelinite. Ancient and recent landslides (last one from 1926) affected marginal parts of the castellated sandstone massif.
Regional geologic unit: Bohemian Massif > Cretaceous of the Bohemian Massif > Bohemian Cretaceous Basin > Bohemian Cretaceous Basin - Labe development;
Bohemian Massif > Tertiary > Tertiary - scaterred relics of alkaline Volcanics
Stratigraphy: Turonian, Tertiary
Subject: geomorphology, sedimentology, engineering geology
Geological phenomenon: sinkhole, swallow hole, rock arch, rock pillar, abyss, pseudocrast cave, landslide, incrustation, mushroom rock, karren
Genesis: sedimentary, aquatic (water activity), aeolian (wind activity), chemogenetic, volcanic , weathering , tectonic, gravitational
Rock: sandstone
