Geology

Short characteristics of the site: The site is located in a roadcut on the southern edge of Kojetín village, which here passes across a former quarry from beginning 20th century. The exposed volcanic rock belongs to the teschenite association of rocks forming small intrusions and submarine extrusions (hydroclastic - shallow-marine eruption) within the Hradiště Formation (Silesian Unit of the Carpathian Flysch Belt). The site is protected as a natural monument "Pikritové mandlovce u Kojetína" since 1997. In fact, the rock is altered hyaloclastite with an amygdaloidal texture. Original mineralogical composition cannot be determined with certainty, but probably was close to picrite. Macroscopically, the rock is pale greenish gray, with an network of calcite veins and abundant calcite amygdals up to 10 mm in diameter. Volcanic glass was primarily dominant component of the rock.
