Geology
Short characteristics of the site:
An active sand pit „U cihelny“ at Velké Opatovice, near the road between Polička and Svitavy, exploiting foundry sand. Subarkoses of the Březno Formation (Coniacian) contain clay galls, gravel beds and trace fossils. Signs of storm influence are present in the top part of the section. A remnant of a former channel is visible, filled with Quaternary sediments: fluvial and alluvial fan sediments pass upwards into colluvio-eolian sediments. Cretaceous subarkoses are deformed by a minor fault 2-3 m in vertical displacement magnitude. Bohemian Cretaceous Basin.
