Geology

Short characteristics of the site: Labe (Elbe) River canyon up to 300 metres deep. It was formed during the Lower and Middle Pleistocene. Canyon walls consist of sediments of Upper Cretaceous age (Cenomanian to Middle Turopnian), mostly quartzose sandstones. In places, the bottom of the canyon is incised into the crystalline basement. A geomorphologically extremely significant site.
