Geology

Short characteristics of the site: The Bohemian Cretaceous Basin and Tertiary volcanics. The Vlhošť phonolite hill, 31 Ma old is dominating this area. The surrounding area consists mostly of quartzose sandstones of the Jizera Formation. Fining-upward cycles about 30 mn thick, are typical for them. Emplacement of a sodalitic phonolite wsas accompanied with ripping up blocks of Cretaceous and underlying rocks, including phyllites and mica schists. Northern margin of the Vlhošť Hill is cut by important fracture zone.
