Geology

Short characteristics of the site: A large abandoned quarry at Jeníkov, west of Teplice, in the Tertiary Most Basin. A 15 m thick body of silicified Upper Cretaceous (Middle Turonian) sandstone with basal conglomerate was exploited as quartzite for the production of refractory materials. The body is underlain by Carboniferous rhyolite and overlain by Upper Turonian calcareous claystones and clayey limestones. The sandstone is formed by 99 % silica. Crystals of barite and pyrite are present on joint planes together with rare sphalerite, galena and fluorite.
