Geology

Short characteristics of the site: Starý Jičín Castle moat exposes Coniacian calcareous conglomerates and sandstones of the Palkovice Formation (Silesian Unit of the Carpathian flysch Belt). Pebbles and cobbles are enclosed in granule groundmass. The clasts are unsorted, composed mostly of Stramberg-type limestone (over 95 %), quartz, dolomitized limestone, detritic sandy limestone of the Těšín type, red trachyte, etc. Medium-grained calcareous sandstones usually form thin intercalations between conglomerate layers. At the bases of the layers erosive channels are locally present. Conglomerates form a klippe of the Silesian Nappe on the Subsilesian Unit.
