Geology
Short characteristics of the site: Veliš hill represents a landscape dominant, which hosted a medieval castle in past. Historically, the castle was used as building stone for houses in the village, and subsequent quarry (actually abandoned) exploited basanite for the same purpose. The natural outcrops and the quarry walls expose lapilli-stones accumulates penetrated by a system of basanite dykes. The lapilli-stones originated from Surtseyan-type eruption in shallow-water environment in Miocene (ca 17 Ma).
