Geology

Short characteristics of the site: This locality geologically belongs to the Chvaletice Proterozoic. It is called "Velká ruda - The Large Ore". It represents old mining workings, now showing small dumps and mounds. The Železné hory Proterozoic consists here of greywackes, sandy schists and so called "Sovoluky Conglomerate". The Proteorozoic rocks suffered an intensive weathering and their superficial parts were changed into typical gossan in places. The iron rich gossan was exploited until thirties of the last century. Later, in fifties compararatively large accumulations of pyrite were investigated. They contain enormous quantity of phosphorus a so also numerous phosphorus minerals, some of them being first on mineral occurrence list in Czechia.
