Geology

Short characteristics of the site: This locality called "Jírova jáma - the Jíra´s Pit" belongs geologically to the Moldanubicum Zone of the South Bohemia and Šumava Mts. This pit is about 30 m deep and represents one of the most interesting relics of the gold mining in this area. The rock itself can be classified as migmatitized paragneiss of the Monotonous Group of the Moldanubicum. The paragneiss is transected by a vein of hydrothermal quartz. Gold is present as an admixture in arsenopyrite mineral. The whole-rock average contens of gold is about 0,1 g/t. The paragneiss consists mainly of quartz and plagioklase with some potassium feldspar, and accessories. This locality is documented in the Register of old mine workings.
