Geology

Short characteristics of the site: The active quarry exposing Cretaceous sediments of the Bílá Hora Formation (the Lower Turonian). This locality is located nearby southernmost margin of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin. The sediment sequence consists of calcareous sandy marlstones and spongilitic claystones silicified in places. This stone is appreciated as a source of building and decoration materials. So called "opuka" (mostly calcareous siltstone or marlstone) is typical for this locality. The section was also studied from hydrogeological viewpoint. This locality belongs to the National Geopark Železné hory - the Iron Mountains".
Regional geologic unit: Bohemian Massif - superficial deposits and post-Variscian magmatites - Cretaceous - Czech Cretaceous Basin
