Geology

Short characteristics of the site: This locality is represented by a wall of abandoned quarry. This area is classified as independent unit of the Železné hory Proterozoic. It is called the Podhořany Crystalline. Nearby thrust line caused an uplift of the Železné hory ridge. The mentioned unit represents a complex of biotite paragneisses with garnet and interbodies of garnetic amphibolite, crystalline limestone and orthogneiss. The biotite paragneiss contains porphyroblasts of garnet as large as several milimetres. The rock is either massive or displays platy disintegration. The locality belongs to the National Geopark "Železné hory - the Iron Mountains".
Regional geologic unit: Bohemian Massif - crystalline complex and pre-Variscian Palaeozoic - Bohemicum (Central Bohemian region) - Železné hory Mts. Proterozoicum
Stratigraphy: proterozoikum - neoproterozoikum (1000 - 542 Ma)
Subject: petrology, mineralogy, geomorphology, structural geology
Geological phenomenon: outcrop, cliff, fault, mineral
Genesis: metamorphic (general metamorphism)
Rock: amphibolite, paragneiss
