Geology
Short characteristics of the site: Bhemian Massif, Quaternary volcanics. Abandoned quarry exposing a lava flow from the Venušina sopka (the Venus Volcano Center). Exposed rocks represent eroded relic of a volcanic cone, consisting mainly of volcaniclastic rocks with interlayers of lava. Three individual lava flows were identified separated by thick layers of volcaniclastic deposits. Basic volcanics are classified as nephelinic basalt up to olivine nephelinite and limburgite. This rock is porous with some augite and olivine phenocrysts. Some parts of basalt bodies show columnar jointing as well as sphaeroidal disintegration. Radiometric dating indicates basalt flow age 1.8 Ma.
Regional geologic unit: Bohemian Massif - superficial deposits and post-Variscian magmatites - Quaternary - Quaternary volcanism of Bohemian Massif
Stratigraphy: kenozoikum - kvartér
Subject: volcanology, petrology
Geological phenomenon: lava flow
Genesis: volcanic
Rock: basanite
