Geology

Short characteristics of the site: Hranice abyss is not only an excellent locality for divers. Dry part of the abyss is around 70 m deep and the depth of water column below is surely more than 205 m. The cave has developed in Upper Devonian limestones by hydrothermal processes. Relics of sediments deposited during Miocene marine transgression were documented in the walls of the abyss and around. The stratotype of the Hněvotín Limestone was defined at this locality. The locality is registered as National Nature Reserve.
