Geology

Short characteristics of the site: Rock cut of the road W of the town about 1100 m long. In the north the sericite - chlorite phyllites with interbeds of graphitic phyllites and quartz veins and lenses crop out (Poniklá Group of Krkonoše - Jizerské hory crystalline complex). They are overlied by red-brown unsorted coarse grained conglomerates to sequence of interbedded siltstone, sandstone and conglomerate (Semily Formation - Carboniferous, Stephanian C). An equivalent of Štěpanice - Čikvásky Horizon, formed by grey conglomerate, sandstone and siltstone is in the upper part of the unit. Above it there is the Rudník Horizon (Lower Member of the Vrchlabí Formation (Permian, Lower Autunian),which is formed by grey mudstones and siltstones with sandstone interbeds and several meters thick layers of bituminous carbonatic mudstones and claystones with banks of dolomitic limestones with rich fossil flora and fauna.
Regional geologic unit: Bohemian Massif - crystalline complex and pre-Variscian Palaeozoic - Lugicum - Krkonoše-Jizerské hory Mts.crystalline complex, Bohemian Massif - superficial deposits and post-Variscian magmatites - Upper Carboniferous and Permian - Lugic Late Palaeozoicum (including Triassic deposits)
Stratigraphy: paleozoikum - perm, paleozoikum
Subject: sedimentology, paleontology, stratigraphy
Geological phenomenon: ripple marks, ichnofossil, concretion , lithological boundary, horizontal section, fossils fauna, fossils-flora, bedding, characteristic rock
Genesis: metamorphic (general metamorphism), sedimentary
Rock: phyllitic schist, chlorite schist, phyllite, claystone, carbonate sedimentary rock, sandstone, siltstone, dolomite, conglomerate, tuffite
