Geology

Short characteristics of the site: The kaolin deposit of the Tertiary age in the Carpathian Foredeep. Its thickness is up to 25 m and by the end of the last century about 35 000 tons of kaolin for paper industry was exploited. Kaolin originated by kaolinization of felldspar, mainly plagioklase from granodiorit. It contains relics of primary rock. For intensive kaolinization hot and wet climatic conditions were inevitable. One layer within the kaolin body contains great amount of montmorillonite.
